Advocacy Days in the Gold Dome, Lunar New Year in Decatur, and Latin American artists at Oglethorpe.

Here’s what’s happening around town this month.

There are lots of Lunar New Year events this month, and we just can’t keep up.  We Love Buford Highway has this great roundup of community happenings in and around the corridor, and Eater Atlanta has this more food focused one.  It’s also Black History Month – check out some local guides to events here and here.

Heads up: the Georgia State Legislature is in session – that’s why there are so many advocacy days in the event listings! To follow the legislative drama at the Capitol – State Affairs’ has informative coverage.

Over 250 community joined the Latino Community Fund -GA and GALEO on January 30, 2024, for ‘Latino Day.’

Saturday, February 3

‘Spread the love – food distribution and family fun day’: Los Vecinos de Buford Highway, in partnership with the Church of Incarnation and the YMCA, is hosting a family event with resources, activities, and food for the first 250 families. 11am to 1pm, 5522 New Peachtree Road #127, Atlanta, 30341. Lunar New Year in Decatur:  Check out performances from the Atlanta Chinese Dance Company, Tinikling, a Filipino dance by Georgia Tech Filipino students, a Lion Dance, and more, at Decatur’s Pan-Asian Lunar New Year festival. There will also be a variety of food vendors and activities for kids. Tickets for adults are $10, kids are FREE. 1pm to 5pm, 105 Electric Avenue, Decatur, 30030. More info here.

Vietnamese group hosts weekend-long festival:  The Vietnamese American Community of Georgia hosts its annual Tet Lunar New Year festival, featuring beauty pageants, a lucky money giveaway, lion dances, and Vietnamese street food. 1pm to 11pm on Saturday and Sunday. Immigrant Rights Thursdays: Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Atlanta (AAAJ-Atl) is gathering folks interested in advocating for immigrants at the Georgia State Capitol. Dinner and a Movie at the Alif Institute: Watch Costa Brava, Lebanon, a film about a family who leaves their home in Beirut to move to a mountain town – only to encounter a garbage landfill just outside their fence. New Americans Celebration: The Coalition of Refugee Service Agencies (CRSA) is bringing together “hundreds of foreign-born Georgians and native-born allies” at the State Capitol for a day of outreach with lawmakers to “support legislation that protects and uplifts Georgia’s new Americans.” 9am to 12:30pm, 206 Washington St SW, Atlanta, 30334. Friday, February 16

Latin American artist exhibit opens at Oglethorpe: Contrapunto – a collective of  Latin American artists based in the Atlanta area – is exhibiting its work at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art. The museum will host a talk with the artists on February 29 (details forthcoming). Melvin Toledo, whose work will be featured at the Contrapunto exhibit at Oglethorpe University this month, is working on a portait of an Eritrean woman in Metro Atlanta who recently became a U.S. citizen.

Job Fair on Buford Highway: The Latin American Association is hosting a job fair and is encouraging folks to come with their resumes.   • Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Atlanta is hiring a Purchasing and Accounts Payable Coordinator.  More info here.  They are also looking for folks to join their Georgia Leadership Lab, a 5 month program focused on storytelling and transformative leadership.
