WATCH NOW: Trailer for “The Third Country”

Here’s a sneak peek at a new documentary about Burmese refugees in Atlanta, brought to you by Tomorrow Pictures, in collaboration with 285 South.

We’re excited to share with you the trailer for The Third Country, a 15-minute short film produced by Tomorrow Pictures, in collaboration with 285 South, made possible by The Pivot Fund.

The film dives into the stories of young Burmese Americans, from their memories in Myanmar to their lives in Thai refugee camps to their first days in elementary school in Clarkston. We talk to them about the sacrifices their parents made, many who have worked in low wage jobs in chicken factories in rural Georgia, and how that impacts how they see their future here.

Among them, Kpor Shee, who moved to Clarkston as a child, and became the first person in her family to go to college. The film captures the moments her parents teared up at her graduation at Clayton State University, as she walked across the stage to receive her degree.

At its heart, the film explores questions central to anyone who has left their birth country to build a new life in the South: What would have made resettling here easier? How did Atlanta provide them opportunities to grow – and what parts of it held them back? And, where and what, is home?

Full film premiering on 285 South on August 28, 2024.
